Midlife transition can be tricky and confusing. In addition to lots of physical changes (hello lack of sleep, growing irritation, jeans that don't fit!), we are also experiencing big emotional and spiritual changes as we move through and beyond the sacred portal of menopause.

This midlife transition (which lasts 7-12 years on average) is a time of shedding what we were, and stepping into a new season of wisdom, mystery, and freedom.

But, like any butterfly can tell you, this dissolution of the old and knitting together of the new can be sticky, disorienting, and hot flashy!

Part of what makes this transition so disorienting is that our dominant culture largely ignores perimenopause and menopause, or sees us only as a physical set of symptoms that can be dealt with medically and clinically. And we're left to figure it out by ourselves. So of course it's confusing and we're often left feeling exhausted and alone.

But this approach ignores our wholeness and devalues the sensitivity and magic we hold during this time. It ignores the sacred identity shifts that are happening within us and the beauty and power of women's relationships with each other.

And it ignores the ways that we can finally shimmy under the fence of patriarchy and run free with our own strength and power.

I believe that a lot of women are suffering during perimenopause and menopause because they don't realize that they're changing on a soul and identity level. Most women don't have spaces to honor and process this huge emotional and spiritual transition, and they don't have guidance or supportive community.

I believe women in midlife need better support through the sacred portal of menopause. Yes, we might need HRT, acupuncture, or weight training. But, we also need more attunement to our inner wisdom, to earth-based guidance, and we need a supportive sisterhood who will embrace who we are becoming.

As you navigate perimenopause and early menopause, I invite you to trust that there is deep learning and magical unfolding in the midlife transition process. I invite your curiosity and inherent wisdom. And I invite you to experience more ease, joy, and empowerment by traveling through this transition together.

For you if you feel this happening at the surface...

If you are a woman in your late 30s, or your 40s or 50s, you are probably noticing some changes in yourself. There are many new things happening, right at the surface of your life.

You might feel like the sparkle and mystery of life that you used to tap into is just not as easy to access. You wish you had more time to connect to that part of you.

You might find yourself inexplicably more irritable—snapping at loved ones or colleagues, annoyed by dirty dishes, your partner’s quirks, small changes in plans, things you once took in stride. You are just so annoyed.

You might feel a sense of increased anxiety—a heightened sense of worry, pressure, and stress even when you can’t quite pinpoint any particular reason (beyond the state of our world, Arg).

You might notice rage or anger that seemingly comes out of nowhere—you’re shouting at traffic or blowing up at small things. Things that always annoyed you now become deal-breakers. You are just so mad!

You might experience brain fog—like you just can’t get clear, you feel muddled or forget words.

You might feel depressed, like life just doesn’t have the sparkle it once did. You no longer have the same drive to move fast all the time, and some days you might not even want to get out of bed.

You might be more tired than usual. You feel lethargic, like you just really don’t want to do that intense yoga workout or trudge up that mountain on a hike. And you feel a heavy weight on your shoulders. You wish you didn’t have to always show up for so many people.

You wish you had more time and space for yourself. You are longing to move at your own pace, to do what you want to do, to have some solitude.

You are feeling a little lost, out of nowhere. Like you don’t quite know why you do what you do anymore, or like you don’t know what is next for you.

You are not sleeping well, not necessarily because of anxiety (although it is there) but you just can’t sleep. Or maybe you get woken up with hot flashes or night sweats that jolt you out of sleep and unsettle you.

These are the struggles that we begin to notice in perimenopause, and that stay with us through the early years of menopause.  On average, women experience 7 years of perimenopause (and some experience up to 15 years), and then at least several more years of early-post menopausal stages—in which our bodies and brains are still changing (according to neuroscientist Dr Lisa Mosconi, PhD).

That’s a long time to be feeling uncomfortable and alone in this upheaval.

And it’s also hard because most of us experience this disruption at a time in life when we have many responsibilities in our families and careers. We are doing a lot and we are in charge of a lot.

It’s confusing, and the changes may be subtle at first…you might wonder, What is happening to me? Why am I so irritable/angry/tired/frustrated/anxious lately? Is it just me? Am I crazy?

You’re not imagining it and there’s nothing wrong with you. It’s just that during perimenopause and beyond, we become more sensitive—and because the stress and demands of our dominant culture and the times we are living in are getting more intense, we feel it even more.  During this time our hormones, brains, and spirits are changing and we become more sensitive and much less tolerant of “the way things were.”

You might blame your family, your relationships, the state of the world, which of course all affect you, but what you might not understand is that you are in the midst of a huge life change that inevitably shifts who you are, that changes your identity, and that invites you into magical new ways of being.

Just under the surface, big changes are happening.

What's happening to you under the surface

You are changing and in this transitional time, your needs and your desires are changing too. (Your earth-body, brain, and spirit are changing)

You might feel like you don't recognize yourself anymore.

You might notice that you’re longing for more slowness, spaciousness, and sacred connections.

You might be yearning for deep solitude, space where you can remember the magic and mystery of life.

You might notice that your work doesn’t fulfill you like it once did, that you’re longing for a new creative outlet, or more purpose and play in what you do.

You might sense a longing for deeper connection with friends, partners, or with the divine. You are longing for a more intimate connection with the more-than-human world, for time in this earth home that refreshes and restores you.

You might feel supremely tired of pleasing others, second guessing yourself, and never adequately expressing your own needs (which might surface as annoyance, irritation, or rage).

You might feel lonely and wish that you had aunties and friends who really understood what you are going through, who could listen to you, and offer stories, clear guidance, and support.

You might notice that you're more cynical or sassy than usual. From deep within you, you just can no longer tolerate certain things, or the way things are. You JUST CAN'T ANYMORE.

This is all part of the process of the huge change and unfolding mystery that is happening within you during perimenopause and early menopause.  You are becoming someone new.  You are becoming more yourself and your soul is calling for attention.

Our dominant culture’s response

Part of why this time is so confusing is that our (patriarchal) dominant culture mostly does not acknowledge this huge transition time in our lives. There is a long history of shame and secrecy around this transition and so we don’t have information, tools, sacred practices, or guidance to support us.

Did you know that there are less menopause symptoms in societies that value women?

While there is some growing attention on perimenopause and menopause in our dominant culture in this current moment, this transition is still largely adressed as physical symptoms to be treated. We are seen as bodies through a medical lens, where the goal is to stamp out symptoms so that we can go “back to normal”….so that we can keep doing our jobs, stay productive, keep taking care of everything and everyone.

We are encouraged to medicate our symptoms immediately, to dominate our true natures, to focus only on what's at the surface, and to believe that this is all really just no big deal. We are encouraged to see perimenopause and menopause as a physical process that can be dealt with medically and clinically.

Every woman will experience this transition. And most of us go through this in relative silence. It’s not talked about much or we believe (and are shown) that no one wants to hear our stories of perimenopause and menopause.

But this approach ignores our wholeness, our needs, and our soul’s longings. It ignores the wisdom of our earth-body and our intuition. It ignores and devalues the sensitivity and magic we hold during this time. It ignores the sacred and the huge identity shift that is happening within us.

This dominant approach ignores our need for each other, for the company of wise wild women who have been through it and are going through it.

You deserve to be seen in the wholeness and fullness of this change. Your soul has new longings—-for solitude, space, and a slower pace, to follow your own wisdom and passions, to be truly seen and supported, to honor the sacred and mysterious, and to be nourished and held during this tender time of transition.

An eco-spiritual approach to midlife

I believe that we can move through midlife transition intentionally, honoring and caring for our soul’s needs, leaning into the mystery and magic of our earth home to support us.

I hold the vision of a gentle, earth-based, mystical, and deeply feminist approach to midlife.

This way is rooted in an earth-based perspective that recognizes that we are nature, and that nature offers her sacred wisdom and guidance at all times.

This way honors our true needs and invites us into a time of transition that is rich with meaningful relationships and ritual.

This way invites us to be seen as unfolding earth beings in this tender time, and to honor the divine within us.

In this process, physical and emotional changes don’t go away but they are recognized as partners in this transition, highlighting what is no longer serving us, pointing to gentle changes that are needed.

And physical and emotional symptoms are not the only voices. Your soul gets a voice, your ongoing story gets a voice, and you become part of a community of wise and magical voices.

You might choose to have medical and body-based support during this time too, but that is not all you need.

The years of perimenopause and early menopause can be a sacred portal---and that women need spaces for soul care, eco-spiritual guidance, and supportive sisterhood so that we can move through this time with more ease, confidence, and joyful liberation.

What becomes possible for you

  • You notice your (new &changing) needs and take them seriously

  • You nurture parts of yourself that have been neglected and you open space for a rich inner life, for mystery and magic

  • You cultivate the ability to nourish your body and to care for your soul through this transition

  • You partner with the earth to move through this change, knowing you have access to her guidance and spiritual support

  • You feel seen, nourished, held, and guided as you travel through this magical transition with other women

  • You expand your Self trust and wisdom with more calm, clarity, courage, and confidence, and earth connection

  • You attend to your soul’s calling and follow it into the unfolding meaning of this phase of life

  • You move through the discomfort of change with more compassion, more ease, and more flow

  • You lean into your intuition and sacred connection to make decisions about what is right for you now

  • You release shame and step into more power as you embrace new ways of aging through the mystical portal of menopause

  • You feel a greater sense of enoughness and no longer feel  bound to the patriarchal standards of youth and beauty.  You celebrate the wisdom and magic of this stage of life
